Edmonton Eskimos: CFL Season Preview
The Edmonton Eskimos finished with a solid 9-9 record in the last season and secured a spot in the playoffs. This constitutes a solid season; the Eskimos were easily eliminated, which was unfortunate in the 1st round of the playoffs by the Stampeders. Needless to say, changes were necessary this offseason.
Accordingly, the Edmonton Eskimos have responded. On the season, the Eskimos surrendered 502 points, last season. This represents the 2nd highest total in the CFL. The defense was decided to revamp a bit by the Eskimos. On February 25th, the Eskimos announced that they would drop 4 defensive players. They continued and released 3 players that are more defensive later in the season.
In order to bolster their struggling defense, the Eskimos took advantage of the draft.
To add some strength and depth to their defense, the Eskimos picked two defensive backs and a defensive lineman. Last season, the lone All Star on the Eskimos was Defensive Back Jason Goss. It looks as though Goss will have some help playing the secondary for the upcoming season.
With another year together, the offense for the Eskimos should improve. The team relied on rookie running back Arkee Whitlock, last season. Whitlock displayed great talent, rushing for more than 6 yards per carry and 1200 yards. Whitlock could continue to improve, with another year of experience. If Whitlock can improve, look for Ricky Ray to do the rest. Ray has been solid throughout his career and looks to produce another stellar season.
The Eskimos could be an improved team if their defense steps up in the 2010 season, with a balanced rushing and passing attack.
