Roughriders sign Shomari Williams to contract

Shomari Williams was the top prospect in the 2010 CFL Draft, and it was no surprise when the Saskatchewan Roughriders selected him first overall.

Saskatchewan announced today that Williams has signed a contract with the Roughriders. Terms were undisclosed. The quick, 6’2” 236 pound (107 kg) Williams is expected to immediately upgrade Saskatchewan’s pass rush.

The Roughriders hope Williams can literally live up to his name. Shomari means “forceful” in Swahili, and Saskatchewan will need him to impose his will on the opposition as he adjusts to life as a professional player.

The Canadian-born Williams played three seasons at the University of Houston. The versatile athlete played fullback and middle linebacker for the Cougars.

He returned to the country of his birth for his senior season, playing defensive end for the Queen’s University Gaels in 2009. He had his best season as a collegian with the Gaels, recording 32 tackles and four sacks during the regular season, and 26.5 tackles and five sacks in the postseason.

Williams was not drafted in April’s NFL Draft. This was not a disappointment for him, as he stated previously that he did not aspirations to play in the NFL.

Williams will have a chance to play with two former Gaels. Kevin Scott and Rob Bagg are currently on the Roughriders’ roster.
