Calgary Stampeders

The Calgary Stampeders were officially born on September 29, 1945. The official formation of the Stampeders followed decades of competitive teams playing in Calgary. Their first game was played on October 22, 1945, against the Regina Roughriders. They prevailed 12-0 in front of 4,000 fans at Mewata Stadium.

It didn’t take long for the Stampeders to enjoy success at the highest level. In 1948, they enjoyed arguably the greatest season in the Canadian Football League’s history. With a 12-0 record which culminated in a Grey Cup victory over the Ottawa Rough Riders, they became the first and only team to achieve a perfect season.

The Stampeders nearly repeated their perfect season the following year, going 13-1 but losing in the title game to the Montreal Alouettes. It would be 19 years before they reached another Grey Cup and 22 years before they ever won one.

The 90s were a very successful decade for Calgary. They signed former Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Doug Flutie to reported million dollar contract in 1992. He would lead them to their third Grey Cup and it would be Flutie’s first of three Grey Cup MVPs.

Following Flutie’s departure, the team was left in the capable hands of future NFL star Jeff Garcia. Garcia would lead them to the 1998 Grey Cup. All in all, the Stampeders played in 5 Grey Cups in the 90s and won 2.

Calgary has also been successful since the turn of the century. They won the Grey Cup in 2001 and again in 2008. After their 2001 Grey Cup victory, they did not win another playoff game until their title run in 2008.
